Our history

Our history

Located in the North-East department, the community of Carice includes the commune of Carice and part of the commune of Mont-Organisé. Sharing, solidarity and community participation used to shape people's lives. After the 2000 elections, a climate of tension and conflict set in, and many values of community life were lost.

Following a reflection involving all sectors of the population, the idea emerged to create a space for dialogue, meeting, education, training and awareness-raising, seeking the unity of all development actors around one vision: building an organized and responsible society.

The process began on 27 April 2001 with a community survey. The results were shared with the population through popular theatre in the main rural settlements, which became discussion circles. The great forum of 16, 17 and 18 November 2001 gave birth to SKDK, registered with the Ministry of Social Affairs and Labour (MAST).

  4. A reference institution

Today SKDK is a reference for development in the North-East, called upon by local actors and territorial authorities.

Our mission

Strengthening the capacities of grassroots organizations (women, youth, farmers) so that they take charge of their own development, promoting a climate of peace and balance between the different groups of the community, promoting a non-violent community, and designing and sharing education, training and awareness programmes.

Our vision

Carice, a united, self-reliant and non-violent community, where social conflicts become spaces for dialogue, driven by the strengthening of local actors' capacities to take charge of their own development.

Our values

What guides our work

The principles on which SKDK and its member organizations base their daily work.

01 / 06

Dialogue

Only sincere dialogue, even when contradictory, between actors with diverging interests can turn social conflicts into drivers of change and cohesion.

02 / 06

Accountability

SKDK reports on its management to its members at quarterly delegates' assemblies and at the annual general assembly, ensuring transparency and good governance.

03 / 06

Territorial and social equity

SKDK encourages the full participation of every part of the community, town and rural sections alike, and equal participation of women and men.

04 / 06

Inclusion

Every voice counts. Everyone must feel valued, respected and fully included, whatever their gender, origin or age.

05 / 06

Self-reliant development

True development is built together by citizens, without a model imposed from outside. SKDK relies on strengthening local capacities.

06 / 06

Responsibility

Everyone takes on their responsibilities and accepts the consequences.

Our results

What we have achieved

  • SKDK has become a multi-stakeholder space for reflection and strategic decision-making on the social problems of Carice and neighbouring communes.
  • Its example led to the emergence and strengthening of four other civil society platforms in neighbouring communes.
  • The commune of Carice has gained visibility at national and international level.
  • Carice drafted its first local development plan, which inspired the communal development plans of the North-East.
  • SKDK is a reference institution for development in the North-East, called upon even by territorial authorities.
